Integrative Cancer Program
“Hi. My name is Cheryl and I was diagnosed with stage III Renal Cell Carcinoma in March of 2013. At that time, the Oncologist quoted me less than 6 months to live. I called Dr. Bhatnagar at Age Management of West Michigan to discuss my diagnosis and what I could do to enhance my health, quality of life and possibly (or “in hopes of”) extending my life while going through chemotherapy. Dr. Bhatnagar met me immediately and started working with me in terms of my diet as well as my emotional and spiritual well-being.
I worked with Dr. Bhatnagar and the nutritionist at his office to manage my diet including foods, drinks, and supplements that I was able to tolerate. they took the time to teach me how the type of cancer I had interacted with each ingredient and my metabolism, then developed a diet that complimented the chemotherapy I was on. My nutritionist from Age Management saw me once a week to follow my progress so if I had questions or if the diet did not agree with me we could change it that day. I also learned about supplements and what the benefits were to me as I fought for my life.
I owe many thanks to the staff of Dr. Bhatnagar and Dr. Ali at Age Management of West Michigan for being so compassionate and patient while working with me as I fought through my journey of becoming what is now CANCER FREE! After surgery I will continue the supplements they recommended as an after care to keeping me Healthy and Cancer Free!!”
The role of Integrative Cancer Treatment is to assist in managing the health of the whole patient as they go through cancer treatment. To work in a supportive role with medical, radiation, and surgical oncologists to improve results with traditional Western medicine treatment protocols and decrease side effects associated with conventional treatment. Integrative Cancer Treatment uses a multidisciplinary method to prescribe nutrition, stress management techniques, exercise, and nutraceutical supplements along with non-traditional drug treatment to provide complimentary options to optimize the patient’s quality of life and cancer treatment success.
Age Management of West Michigan uses a multidisciplinary approach in developing patient centered cancer treatment programs.
The latest research and educational findings support the positive influence of proper nutrition and diet on cancer treatment and prevention. Diet plays a key role in supporting a strong immune system and help control inflammation in the body. A whole food diet with emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables, along with organic lean proteins is preferred to prevent and treat cancer. Simple sugars, bad fats, and processed foods that feed cancer growth and inflammation are eliminated from the diet. Each patient works one on one with a nutritionist to develop an individualized nutrition program.
High Dose Vitamin C has been studied as a treatment protocol for cancer since the 1970’s. Lab studies have shown that at high levels Vitamin C acts as a pro-oxidant in the body and promoted cancer cell apoptosis (cell death) and decreased cancer cell proliferation. HDIVC has also shown in researched studies to have anti-tumor effects, stimulate Natural Killer Cell activity that attacks cancer cells, and down regulates (VEGF) Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor that promotes cancer migration. HDIVC has been very well tolerated by most patients. HDIVC also reduces the toxic side effects and increases effectiveness of several chemotherapies. The promotion of healing and anti-inflammatory properties of HDIVC have been shown to improve quality of life in terminal cancer patients.
Low Dose Naltrexone might exert its effects on tumor growth through a mix of three possible pathways:
LENS biofeedback has been effective in dramatically decreasing stress and promoting relaxation, while optimizing overall brain function in 80% of patients. Diagnosis of Cancer along with Cancer treatment is one of the most stressful times of an individuals life. Research has shown the effects of stress have been linked to almost every cancer type. Every Study on stress reduction shows improved quality of life and some show improved survival rates.
A nutraceutical is a product isolated or purified from foods that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with food. A nutraceutical is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease such as cancer. There are many supplements that have been proven repeatedly to have a positive effect in strengthening the body’s immune system functions in treating and preventing cancer. Each patient will work with the physician and nutritionist to develop an individualized nutraceutical supplement program specific for their integrative cancer treatment plan.
National Cancer Institute: “Hyperthermia is a type of cancer treatment which increases core body temperatures up to 101°F to destroy and eliminate cancer cells. Using Far Infrared heat to produce hyperthermia has proven to be an effective method of cancer treatment.”
Hyperthermia has been used successfully in conjunction with traditional cancer therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy in clinics around the world. Far Infrared sauna creates hyperthermia which increases blood flow and oxygen to cancer tumor cells making them more responsive to medical treatments.
Numerous researched trials show evidence that even a modest exercise regimen when compared to sedentary lifestyle improves survival during cancer treatment dramatically. A consistent moderate weight resistance training routine to maintain lean muscle and relaxation and stretching routines like yoga are especially important for body maintenance during cancer treatment.
